While the impact of the pandemic on local businesses, particularly in the hospitality fields cannot be overstated, our community continues its efforts to support local businesses. At the same time, our major employers continue to push ahead. Manufacturing and Health Care continue to be the largest employment sectors, together employing nearly 11,000 people, which is about half of our total private employment.
This community has long been a successful home to manufacturers, with several local companies recognized as national leaders. Standard Steel, our oldest employer, traces its roots back to 1795, when Freedom Forge used ore found in the nearby hills to produce iron bars and rods. Still in operation today, Standard Steel is thought to be the oldest continuously operating forge in America. Owned by Nippon Steel Corporation, Standard Steel is the only producer of forged steel wheels for railcars and locomotives in North America.

One important element to the success of our economic base is its diversity. Several industry-leading companies have found the Juniata River Valley to be a key ingredient in their success. Companies like Empire Kosher, the nation’s largest kosher poultry producer and First Quality Enterprises, Inc., whose Lewistown facility opened just over a decade ago have earned their place in the national spotlight.
